[Invitation] Workshop on Scientific Writing: Heading to Thomson-Reuters

Since 2013, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia has been spreading the needs of publishing scientific articles, the published scientific articles should get indexed Scopus, and also Thomson-Reuters. It must be done in order to ensure that the innovation and scientific ideas of all researchers and lecturers in Indonesia can be recognized by other researchers worldwide. Consequently, Publication and Management Services (PMS) as one of unit which manages the publications in Universitas Sriwijaya organizes valuable events to ensure the needs of reputable publications are understandable. Not only spreading about the needs and policies, PMS also spread the strategy to get the article indexed.

Well-written and well-prepared articles can be indexed by the big two indexes, Thomson-Reuters and Scopus. In 2016, PMS had been organized scientific workshops, most of events were focused on how to get in Scopus. This year, on 14-15 February, PMS are going to organize a similar event. The event is themed “From Research to Manuscript: Heading to Thomson-Reuters”.

Thomson Reuters Web of Science (generally known as ISI Web of Science or ISI). It is the traditional source of citation data, established by Eugene Garfield in the 1960s. Thomson Reuters utilizes its internal editorial board. It consists of subject experts and specialists who are highly familiar with the contents and policies. According to Access, Thomson Reuters has a basic evaluation standard which includes:

  • Timeliness – publishing according to announced schedule
International editorial conventions – including full bibliographic information
  • Full-text English or at least bibliographic information in English. A&HCI and SSCI have exceptions to the English policy. All journals must have citations using the Roman alphabet
  • Peer review
  • Editorial content – for new journals does it add to the science knowledge base
  • International diversity – among the journal’s contributing authors, editors, and editorial advisory board members. However, a small number of regional journals are also included
  • Citation analysis – every citation, from every article, whether or not the cited source is in Web of Science

As an extra information, according to Jim Testa, the VP Emeritus Editorial Development & Publisher Relations, in the article about Thomson-Reuters journal selection process, which is posted in official Thomson Reuters website,  WOS accepts about 10-12% of the approximately 2,000 journals evaluated annually.

There is more information about Thomson-Reuters. Consequently, PMS need to invite all researchers of UNSRI to the workshop of scientific writing, from research to manuscript: heading to Thomson-Reuters. The event will engage Prof. Dr. Zakir Bin Salam from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.  By organizing this event, we hope, at the end, the researchers of UNSRI will decide by their own, which journal, which index.
