Since 2013, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia has been spreading the needs of publishing scientific articles, the published scientific articles should get indexed Scopus, and also Thomson-Reuters. It must be done in order to ensure that the innovation and scientific ideas of all researchers and lecturers in Indonesia can be recognized by other researchers worldwide. Consequently, Publication and Management Services (PMS) as one of unit which manages the publications in Universitas Sriwijaya organizes valuable events to ensure the needs of reputable publications are understandable. Not only spreading about the needs and policies, PMS also spread the strategy to get the article indexed.
Well-written and well-prepared articles can be indexed by the big two indexes, Thomson-Reuters and Scopus. In 2016, PMS had been organized scientific workshops, most of events were focused on how to get in Scopus. This year, on 14-15 February, PMS are going to organize a similar event. Workshop on paraphrasing, summarizing, and citing scientific articles conducted by Publication and Management Services (PMS) Sriwijaya University on November, 18-19 2016 was a clear success. The focus on the workshop is giving the whole view and knowledge about the importance of doing paraphrasing, summarizing, and citing while writing the scientific manuscript.
In the day of event, the lecturers who represented their faculty come and joined the event enthusiastically. Paraphrasing and summarizing are very similar, or even some people might think that both are same. Paraphrasing and summarizing are about taking the idea from source material, words or phrases from a source and crafting them into new sentences within your writing.
Paraphrasing and summarizing may be done by authors when the authors put the information about source material. It is well known as citation. The citation is important part because by doing citing, authors will not be branded as plagiarism actor. When does the author do plagiarism? The author does plagiarism when (Colorado University, 2016):
– Using an author’s language and ideas without proper attribution
– Passing off an author’s ideas or text as one’s own

The second workshop of research to manuscript has been successfully held by PMS Unsri. A long list of participant from all faculties in UNSRI come and join passionately. We accommodated this event in order to bring same perspective about the importance of doing a research publication.
In UNSRI, there are big number of researchers, but the awareness to bring the research to the world does not align to the number. Moreover, PMS Unsri invited researchers whom familiar with writing and publishing research manuscript to share their experiences and knowledge. They are Marieska Verawaty, Ph.D., Aldes Lesbani, Ph.D., and Dr.Eng Khoirul Anwar. We are so lucky for having them as our speakers in this event.
Marieska Verawaty, Ph.D. said that one of the key success towards a good research manuscript is doing a literature review. Literature review defines as a process in making a report which is created by critical thinking towards information which is found in the related literature. Writing a research manuscript is difficult task to do. But the difficulties are aligned with the rewards. Eventhough, it is difficult, the researchers should write research manuscript because it is a good opportunity for researchers to share and communicate their ideas with other people around the world.
In order to produce well-written manuscript the researchers should write the research manuscripts ethically and methodologically . The published manuscript should be accurate, well-structured, and enable the readers to understad what researchers try to show. Publishing is a great way to improve the practice and theories, get feedback, and provide a venue to develop and debate new ideas. As we said in our previous post that for most researchers, nothing will be more important than success in publishing their paper in reputable journal indexed by Thomson-Reuters and Scopus. In order to provide the researchers in UNSRI, PMS has successfully organized event such as workshop of academic writing for reputable journal and workshop for scientific writing: from research to manuscript. This August and early September, 30 August-1 September 2016, PMS will organize similar event which will provide comprehensive guidance for all lectures of UNSRI in publishing high quality of manuscript. The event will be titled Workshop on Academic Writing for Reputable Journal.
In this event, Ir.Endra Joelianto, Ph.D and Augie Widyotriatmo, Ph.D from IEEE Indonesian Section CSS/RAS Joint Chapter will be invited as advisors. They will conduct materials about processes along publication and best practices included strategy to get the manuscript published in Scopus/Thomson-Reuters Index. Recently, Publication Management Services UNSRI organized an event titled Scientific Writing : From Research to Manuscript Workshop. It was held at Pascasarjana Unsri, on 21st-22nd July 2016 and successfully engaged Prof. Dr. Ir. Benyamin Lakitan, M.Sc. and Prof. Dr. Drs. Terry Mart as Advisors. This event was targeted to provide best practices along scientific manuscript writing.
Prof.Benyamin said that all researchers had to decide between “publish or perish” the manuscript. The importance of this message to all lecturers who desire to advance at their university. But, although the most of researchers would like to publish their work, the problem which comes to new authors is forcing the first step by submitting the first manuscript. There are some obstacles such as the lack of confidence and the fear of having the manuscript rejected. To ensure the opportunities of manuscript get published, Prof. Benyamin Lakitan suggested the authors to make sure that the topic is relevant and up-to-date. By starting with an interesting and relevant issue, the reviewer will read the manuscript passionately. At least, there is less chance that the manuscript will be thrown away.
